Dark Tide in Pictures, Part I

In celebration of the launch of Dark Tide in the US and Canada this week, I thought you might all like to see some pictures of the setting for the book.

IMAG1015

This picture was taken from the Medway Bridge (more pictures of that in a minute) In the foreground is the non-residential marina which is the main setting for the story. Sorry for the quality of the picture – I’d taken my camera, it managed three pictures and then the battery died – so I had to resort to my phone.  In the distance of the picture above, you can see Rochester Castle and to the right of it the spire of Rochester Cathedral.

Here’s a picture of the park on the Esplanade. Dylan phones Genevieve while she is here on her bike, towards the end of the novel: his white van is parked right about where that yellow car is.

IMAG1024 Rochester Castle:

“I got as far as the castle, the outer wall covered in fiery Virginia creeper like lava pouring from the battlements. I carried my bike up the steps and into the castle grounds, and found a bench…”

“…’There’s nobody here. Nobody suspicious, anyway,’ I said, looking out at the couple walking across the green, pushing a stroller. By the steps to the castle, an elderly couple sitting on a bench. The woman was laughing, clutching her chest. A few students with matching backpacks were sprawled on the grass. I could hear faintly the tinny noise of music, played through a cell phone…”

And on to Rochester High Street… when I took my pictures this morning it must have been one of the few days of the year when they don’t have bunting strung across the street in celebration of some festival or other. There’s always something going on there.

IMAG1038And the Dot Cafe – that’s real, too. Genevieve sits outside and has a latte and a bacon sandwich.

I’ll stop there I think – I have plenty more pictures to share but I will save those for tomorrow. On another note – does anyone have a photo request? Either in relation to the settings for Dark Tide, or anything else! Let me know and I will see what I can do.

xx

World of Books, and something to amuse you all…

I’ve done an interview with the World of Books blog today – some fantastic questions that really made me think. If you’re interested in reading more about how I write and what The Wurzels have to do with anything, you can read the interview here.

The Wurzels

In other news, this blog post will be a little bit of a cop-out as I’m fairly brain-numbed this evening due to lack of sleep, so I will be heading off to a nice soak in the bath with my book (Soho, 4am by Nuala Casey if you’re interested) followed by an early night.

I wanted to share with you something interesting first, though.

As an intelligence analyst I had to read a lot of crime reports and intelligence reports – documents produced often in a hurry by people who spent most of their time chasing people, arresting idiots, getting sworn at and threatened and standing around in the rain. So occasionally there are spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, and sometimes these are funny. What can I say – on busy, stressful days in the office we took our amusement wherever we could.

After a little while I started to collect these snippets of text under the heading ‘Gems’ and pretty soon other people started looking out for them, too. I will share some of them with you this evening and I will add more under the tag ‘Gems’ whenever I find myself at a loss of something to write about.

Brace yourselves, people. These are all completely genuine:

“Police attended the address where the IP was spoken too who stated that the IP and offender had been out for the evening, to the Bowel Plex. On returning to the HA, offender was very intoxicated.”

“The inft states that between the times states there have been Florissant spiders painted on the side of vans and lorries in the yard in red, white and green paint.”

(we eventually worked out that ‘Florissant’ probably was an attempt at ‘fluorescent’)

“Jewellery was eventually located in a chester draws”

And, ladies and gentlemen, my all-time personal favourite:

“On attendance they found evidence of a cannabis factory, but no live plants remained just dead storks.”

I thank you, and goodnight….

Dark Tide Launch Day!

It’s the early hours of the morning here, so technically this was yesterday, but don’t confuse me. I’m easily confused at this time of night when I’ve had three strong coffees.

Today was the publication day for Dark Tide in the US and Canada!

Dark Tide

To celebrate, I got to talk to Ian Graham Leask at KFAI Write On! Radio in Minneapolis. I was ridiculously nervous before I called in to the studio, not helped by being both tired and strung out on caffeine to try and compensate. I didn’t yawn and although I did get my words muddled up a few times hopefully I didn’t sound like a complete no-hoper. Ian’s good to talk to, though. It’s like chatting with a good mate and easy to forget that lots of people are listening in.

(Note to self: a nap in the afternoon might have been an idea.)

#JWKOMAY

I spent most of today reading an utterly brilliant book. One of the big perks of this writing lark is that *whispers* people send you free books to read. This is great! And every once in a while it becomes awesome when you get to read one that you know is going to be a massive hit. Today’s book was that. It’s called ‘Just What Kind of Mother Are You?’ (#JWKOMAY) by Paula Daly, and let me tell you this is my book of the year, without question. I started reading late last night and thought I would just start it off… two hours and a third of the book later, I forced myself to stop. This morning I got all my jobs done first so that I knew I would be able to sit down and concentrate on the book. You know what I mean? It was *that* kind of book…

I have another five or six books just sitting here waiting for me to read! Which one to go for next?
